AIM: To give the children an achieveable and repeatable model for planning a complete story in a short space of time.
K.S. 2 STORYTELLING SESSION (Approx 1 hour) 1. Identify the key elements of a story. 2. Tell an age-appropriate traditional story with suitably involved plotline to engage the imagination and participation of older children. 3. Analyse the story and have a short discussion about the component parts and whether the story fulfilled all of the criteria 4. Have a short, physical activity where the pupils stand up and sit down to re-engage their attention. 5. Use everyday objects to create a complete story that is relevant to their current curricular study. 6. Q&A about how to improve their own writing and questions about the kind of work that I do.
K.S. 2/ Y.6 WRITING WORKSHOP session (Approx 1 hour) 1. Identify the key elements of a story and the needs of the reader. 2. Using elements from a variety of familiar, non-fairy tale story beginnings, compose a unique opening sentence. 3. Taking 2 random, everyday, classroom objects as a stimulus for the beginning and middle of a story. 4. Only the beginning and middle of the story are told and the group is asked to give a range of possible endings. 5. Under supervision, the children write out their own ending of the story.
ALL OF THE ABOVE IS ADAPTABLE TO WHAT THE SCHOOL , TEACHERS AND CHILDREN NEED. I CAN FOCUS ON THE FINER POINTS OF WRITING WITH MORE ABLE CHILDREN AND DEVELOP STRATEGIES FOR THOSE CHILDREN WHO NEED MORE HELP TO COMMIT THOUGHTS TO PAPER.
